Hillerød; Sunday, 30 August, 2026

The original forecast for Sunday had been a total washout, so I was pleasantly surprised to see the odd speck of blue sky amongst the clouds when I woke up.

I had a quick breakfast and then headed out of the hotel whilst it was still dry for the 20-minute walk across town to the Bymuseum, the City Museum, located at one of the highest points in the town, close to the castle lake. The museum was previously called the Folkmuseum, indicated by the historic signage on the outside of the building, but today it’s dedicated to the history of the town from it’s founding around 1500 through to the modern day, with the ground floor housing a timeline exhibit and the upper floor recreations of what shops, houses and schools would have looked like over time in Hillerød.

I spent quite a bit of time in the museum and then wandered back out into the castle gardens for another wander through the grounds, though occasionally having to seek shelter under large trees as the odd short by very sharp shower passed overhead.

I wandered back round the castle gardens down to the castle itself and stopped in the Inner Courtyard in time to catch the Church Clock Tower put on it’s 1pm performance, before heading back out of the castle, aiming for the second museum of the day.

The City History museum is located in part of the former Power Plant of Hillerød, and, at least according to it’s website, is open from 11am-3pm Saturdays and Sundays from Mid-August until late September, so of course when I got there at 13:30 it was completely locked up, all the lights off, looking like it hadn’t opened in some time. This was annoying, even more so because I’d brought a joint ticket at the Bymuseum for both sites, can’t help thinking I was a little scammed on that one!

After looking around the outside I headed back into town to grab a bite to eat and plan what to do for the afternoon, during which time the weather made the decision for me.

Looking at the weather apps, it indicated that there was a lengthy period of very heavy rain on the way, so I made the decision it would be foolish to get soaked and headed back to the hotel. For a little while I thought I’d overreacted and wasted the afternoon, but by about 3pm the skies had opened and it poured it down for several hours.

Eventually the rain stopped just before sunset, so I was able to pop out and have a bit of a wander around before grabbing a bite to eat and then heading back to the hotel.
