Rønne; Monday, 25 August, 2025

I had a bit of a lie-in and then a late breakfast before packing up my things and heading out of the hotel, making sure to follow the instructions to have my room door pinned open before 11am to show that I had vacated the room.

From the hotel I had a bit of a wander around town as I had some time to kill before my ferry back over to Ystad, so I headed back over to the main church in town – St Nicholas Church – to have a look around that, and then a bit of a walk around the harbour area, before heading over to the terminal to check in and wait for the ferry back.

The journey back over was as well organised and smooth as the journey over and 75 minutes after departing Rønne we’d crossed back into Sweden and arrived in Ystad. I had several hours before my evening flight back to London, and had originally thought about heading straight back to Copenhagen or possibly to Malmö, but in the end I decided to explore Ystad instead spending a couple of hours wandering around the town.

I first headed up to the main square the Stortorget and then visited the town church which located on the square, before wandering through the very pretty alleyways of the old town and reaching the Klostret i Ystad – a former Greyfriars monastery which is now a museum, though given it was Monday it was, of course, closed.

I spent a couple of hours wandering around Ystad before it was time to start making the journey back towards Denmark and my flight home. I walked down to the station and picked up the train back towards Malmö, though the ticket I had was a 3-hour travel anywhere in Skåne County ticket with extension to Copenhagen Airport, which gave me an idea for how to kill a bit more time, and have a more comfortable journey.

From all experiences of using the Øresundtåg the trains are very busy between Copenhagen, the Airport and onto Malmö – something I’d witnessed first hand in Malmö on Saturday morning as the train before mine to Ystad had been one to the airport and it left bulging at the seams, so I decided to take advantage of my ticket and head a couple of stops past Malmö and onto the city of Lund where I’d change trains to head back.

The plan worked perfectly as I had about 10 minutes to wait in Lund to board a mostly empty train and get a seat, only for the train to completely fill at Malmö C, and people struggling to board at Malmö Hyllie, whilst I sat back in comfort for the 15 minutes across the bridge and for the fourth time in a couple of days a crossing of the Danish/Swedish border.

Back at the airport I wandered over to Terminal 2, printed out a boarding pass as my phone was quite low on battery, and then headed through security and into the lounge to wait the couple of hours before the flight back to London.
