From the hotel I first headed down to the waterfront to visit the Waterpoort – the old water gate in the city walls when this part of the waterfront was fortified and nearby the Maaspunttoren which represented the end of the fortifications on the Wyck side of the river.
Having taken in the fortifications I headed up and over the river on the John F. Kennedy Bridge, which is the main vehicle crossing over the river to the south of the city centre, and from here there were excellent views back to the High and Sint-Servaas Bridges.
The bridge drops pedestrians out in the Stadtspark which I had a short wander around, taking in the views of the towers of the outer fortifications, before heading back over the river to the hotel to freshen up, pack and checkout.
I walked back to the station and had intended on stopping for some lunch at one of the cafes around it, but there were notices on the departures boards that there were problems with the line around Utrecht with trains being delayed, and as there was one about to head in that direction I thought it was probably wisest just to grab something from the supermarket to eat on the train and start making the journey home.
In the end the delays only added about 10 minutes to the journey to Utrecht, though that was enough time to miss the connecting train to the airport, so I had to catch the one 15 minutes later, but that didn’t really have much of an impact as I still had plenty of time.
And in fact, by the time I got to the airport, much more time than I needed as I got a message on the BA app to say that my flight had been delayed by nearly 90 minutes – so I could have quite happily spent longer in Maastricht.
With lots of time to kill I took the leisurely and slow route through the airport and over to the lounge to waste a couple of hours before it was time to catch the plane back to London.
