In the end it was closer to an hour and three quarters as the inbound train was over 20 minutes late and the driver had to have his statutory break, so we left almost equally as late, though by the time the train finally arrived in Beverley it had made up most of that time.
From the station it was a short walk round to the hotel where I checked in, dropped off my stuff in the room and then headed out for an evening wander around the town centre.
The first stop, and visible from my hotel room was the Minster. Despite it’s size – it’s bigger than over a third of all English Cathedrals, it is just a Parish Church, though formerly the collegiate church of a monastery, it didn’t make the cut for cathedral status during the dissolution on the monasteries, so it has just spent the last near 500 years being one of the largest regular churches in the country.
From the Minster I wandered through the centre of town, taking in the Wednesday Market, the Victorian East Riding County Hall and the older Georgian era Guildhall just behind it, and at the other end of the core of the town centre the Saturday Market including the Market Cross.
Just beyond the Saturday market I had a quick look around the outside of the other large church in the town centre, St Mary’s and then a little way beyond that the last remaining Gate or Bar – the North Bar that still controls traffic coming into the town, though these days its more because only one lane of traffic can pass through it at a time.
From the North Bar I started to make my way back through town, stopping off to grab a quick bite to eat in the town centre before heading back to the hotel and a good nights sleep.
