I decided to head back along the promenade into Maspalomas and then continued past the beach bars and out into the vast sand dunes that dominate the South Eastern corner of the island.
To attempt to preserve the dunes the local authorities have set up a number of well signed paths, with posts at very close intervals to show you where to walk, and signposts along the way where paths divide. Of course it doesn’t stop lots of tourists leaving the past and stomping up the pristine dues, but in places there were still some that didn’t have footprints all over them.
From the lighthouse to the viewpoint on the other side of town it was about a 2Km walk, though on sand it took the best part of an hour (the photo stops may not have helped that).
A short walk from the viewpoint and I made it to the bus stop for the bus back to the hotel with about 5 minutes to spare, only to watch it sail past completely full about 10 minutes later, so instead I hopped on the bus behind that was heading back to the lighthouse and hopped off there to walk back to the hotel.
Back at the hotel I had about 35 minutes to freshen up and pack before I needed to checkout and then I ended my stay at the hotel as I had started it, spending just over the hour sat in the lobby bar, albeit this time waiting for my transfer.
The transfer ran smoothly, which of course meant I was at the airport more than three hours before my flight, so I was very glad I was travelling with hand luggage only and didn’t have to wait for checkin to open before I could head through security and to the lounge to wait out until departure time.
