A smooth journey through the airport and onto the flight came to grounding halt at Hamburg as we had to wait on the plane for over 40 minutes after everyone else had departed waiting for assistance. During the time the cleaning crew came on and left, the cabin crew changed over and the passengers of the returning flight were slowly racking up a big delay. Eventually assistance arrived and helped mum off the plane and them promptly landed us as though we were arriving from a Schengen destination, completely skipping passport control and going straight to baggage reclaim where are bags were the only one still going round on the carousel.
Bags and walking frame recovered we headed out of the airport and down to the station to catch the S-Bahn into the Hauptbahnhof and change there onto the Regional Express train out to Kiel, which turned out to be a much smoother journey.
A short walk from the station to the hotel and we checked in before heading out for an early evening wander round the city, crossing over the bottom of the Kiel Fjord to explore both sides of the city centre and stopping off at a small restaurant for a quick bite to eat.
We headed back to the hotel and stopped off for a quick nightcap before mum headed to bed and I headed back out for a bit more of a wander around the city at dusk before heading to bed myself.
