General:

This is the main airport for the region, serving Tuscany, Pisa and Florence (though there is a smaller airport on the outskirts of Florence). It is a regional hub for some of the low-cost carriers

Appearance:

The building looks to have been refurbished some point in the not too distant past, but it is still a very small and cramped building

From the plane you walk across the tarmac to the terminal building, straight into the immigration desks. These back onto the baggage reclaim hall, which is about the most spacious part of the airport. From there it is a short walk through the customs hall to the arrivals hall

A couple of desks just as you walk into the terminal building, the EU queue was moving quite quickly, until someone with a passport from outside the EU got to the front and they went through the full checking, rather than directing them to the Non-EU queue

One of the larger areas of the airport, though it was still very crowded as three flights had landed within a short period of time

A short corridor with a couple of customs officials standing around.

The airport station closed in late 2013 to be replaced by a light railway link to Pisa Centrale which is due to be open in mid 2015. In the interim small buses link the airport to the central station. For Florence a couple of companies compete to offer coach services, taking around an hour

After checking-in in the cramped check-in area you are funnelled through the equally cramped security area into the departures lounge. When I visited every flight was leaving almost on time, which is thankful as the lounge is so small that if there were several delayed flights there would be nowhere to stand, let alone sit. From the departures lounge there is a separate terminal for flights out of the Schengen zone which requires climbing a flight of stairs, joining a long queue for passport control and then, once cleared through the gate descending another flight of stairs. From the gates you walk out across the tarmac to your plane

A couple of café/bars are landside. Airside there is only one small outlet

There are no real restaurants only cafés

There are a couple of small shops landside, and a handful of tax free shops in the small departures lounge

The toilets are quite basic, and not very plentiful
